October 2020

Dear Partner,

My Bible is so marked up throughout the book of Proverbs that it is almost unreadable. When I was in my late teens, I came to realize that wisdom was the “principal thing.” (Proverbs 4:7) So I made it my quest to read and study the book of Proverbs and confess and declare that I was “filled with the wisdom of God” every day. Wisdom will keep you out of trouble! Wisdom, knowledge and understanding are key components.

As an example, Jesus said in Mark 16:17-18, “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

If you have read that scripture, you have knowledge that Jesus said that – which is good. Knowledge doesn’t mean you understand it, but at least you know it.  You have to ask, “What did Jesus mean in relation to His life and ministry?” Jesus cast out devils, healed the sick, and told His disciples to be filled with the Holy Spirit, so He must be saying we will do the same if we believe.

Although the religious leaders wanted to kill Him, Jesus ministered freely and suffered no harm until He gave Himself to be offered as a sacrifice for sin. So when He said, “…they will not be injured if they handle snakes or drink poison…” (CJB version), He was saying we would walk in divine protection from the attack of the enemy. The Apostle Paul was bitten by a snake and shook it off without having a reaction, and I have heard of instances where poison was put in the food of early Pentecostal believers and they survived by the power of God.

Picking up poisonous snakes or drinking poison to prove your faith shows a lack of understanding of the scripture and departs entirely from wisdom. The devil tempted Jesus to depart from wisdom and prove His faith in Psalm 91:11-12 by having Him jump off the temple. Don’t ever let the devil or anyone else tell you what to do with your faith!  Follow the Holy Spirit’s direction for your life. Do what HE tells you to do and you will be safe.

Have confidence in God’s protection, walk in wisdom, and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. Then let God do the rest!

                                                                         In Christ,

Annette Capps
